There are certainly homeopathic remedies that are not based in scientific facts. Yet some mysteriously work wonders. Is it the placebo effect? Or are there just nuances to our health that we still don’t understand completely? Regardless of these questions, when something works for you, it works. Oil pulling is one example of a do-it-yourself dental treatment (credited to ancient Ayurvedics) that many people attest to. The idea is simple: using organic oil as a twenty minute mouthrinse is thought to pull bacteria and other hostile organisms out of your mouth, which you can then spit into the sink. Sheridan dentist, Dr. Donald Coon believes this could be a reasonable home remedy to enhance a thorough oral hygiene practice.
More on Oil Pulling
According to experts on oil pulling, several oils are suitable for this dental application. In fact, you may even consider rotating oils. Coconut, sunflower, grapeseed, sesame, and olive are all good choices, provided that they are extra virgin cold pressed. To implement the oil pulling procedure, start with about a tablespoon of oil. Gently swish the oil around in your mouth, pulling and pushing through your teeth for about 20 minutes. As the oil mixes with your saliva, it should turn thick and white. This is when you will spit the oil out, and in theory, many toxins and germs that have been “pulled” into the mixture.
No Guarantees
Do dentists, in general, believe that oil pulling eradicates the bacteria that cause tooth decay, plaque, and bad breath? Many members of various medical professions are beginning to embrace a blend of western and eastern techniques. However, dentists do become concerned when patients rely solely on homeopathic methods for oral health concerns. Even if your oil pulling experience has freshened your breath, made your teeth feel cleaner, and look whiter, this should not substitute brushing twice-a-day with a fluoridated toothpaste, flossing daily, and coming in to see Dr. Coon for a checkup and cleaning every six months.
